There are many types of software on the market these days for mechanical engineers in the pipe design field. However, not all of them are created equal or work well with other CAD based programs. Due to the irregularities in most CAD based software, piping jobs for mechanical engineers often require a specialized software program in order to fully create a functioning, safe and effective system.

One of the most effective design software programs on the market today is the ALGOR PipePAK. This great software package performs structural analysis and provides visualization tools, flexible design methods and report generation. There are also static stress analysis and mass moment of inertia models.

There are of course other software programs on the market for pipe design engineers that are comparable to the PipePak. Intergraph is another company that has taken the lead in producing specialized software for the pipe design industry. With their SmartPlant suite of software programs, a central database streamlines the entire plant design process and eliminates the need for paper P&ID sheets.

With so many different materials going into plants these days, having a software program manage the piping and instrumental diagram (P&ID) process only makes sense. Since many of the companies that are hiring mechanical engineers for their work are based overseas, having the ability to remotely design and develop a functioning system saves time and money.

One feature that most software programs are now integrating into their platforms is the interference detection. This method is offered by many 3D design programs and is only recently being integrated into piping design software.

For those that are looking to find a lower cost solution for piping engineer software, the ZWCAD software is a great solution. It is an effective drawing and drafting solution that works with Windows and AutoCAD based operating systems and programs. There is also the ability to create applications within it and has a lot easier operation to increase ease of use.
