MPEG (Moving Pictures Experts Group) is the name of the ISO expert group which is working to establish standards for encoding and compressing of video and audio data. Standards prepared by the Committee received the same name as MPEG-1, MPEG-2 etc.

MPEG-1

The first standard appeared on the market was MPEG-1. It was developed in 1992 for the compression of video on CD-ROM media and formed the basis for Video-CDs (VCD). Qualitative parameters of the video data processed by the MPEG-1, in many ways are similar to ordinary VHS-video, so this format was used as a replacement for VHS when it was inconvenient or impractical to use a standard analog Video media. The MPEG-1 format became very common in Asia and seriously pushed the VHS-devices out of the market.

MPEG-2

After that, the MPEG-2 standard was developed. In MPEG-2 standard, as compared to MPEG-1, there is multichannel sound added in the media, increased image resolution, improved quality of coding etc. As a result, MPEG-2 was widespread in the satellite broadcasting industry and the DVD.

MPEG-3

MPEG-3 was going to become the new standard, but at the end it added only slight differences to MPEG-2 so it was not embraced by the multimedia community.

MPEG-4

Truly revolutionary was the MPEG-4, the development of which was officially completed in 1998. But since MPEG-4 is, in essence, a set of tools, these were expanded and updated over time. Recently more additions to the standard were made and it actually became an extension of MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 and has a lot of innovative solutions, not all of which have found applications in devices and media content however. The MPEG-4 standard was conceived as a way of streaming media, especially video, over channels with low bandwidth. Suddenly, it won popularity within users, due to the fact that it allowed to post full-length movies lasting one and a half to two hours in a good quality all on one CD-ROM and share video files online.

The MPEG-4 standard defines how to work with a digital representation of multimedia data for three categories: the actual interactive multimedia (including products distributed on optical disks and the network), graphics applications (synthetic content) and digital television – DTV. In fact, the format specifies the rules organizing the environment, and object-orientation.

At relatively low bitrates and with certain encoding conditions, the picture quality in movies with MPEG-4 can be comparable or even better than in the case of MPEG-1 or MPEG-2. The algorithm for video compression in MPEG-4 works in the same manner as in the previous format. Compression of sound is most often done in the format of MP3, Ogg Vorbis, or WMA.
