Practically everyone is familiar with the two-dimensional computer scanner. You place a sheet of paper on the scanner and press a button to copy the image to your computer. Using 3d scanning is a way to produce a similar image of a three-dimensional image in a digital format without the scanner ever contacting the image.

You may be thinking that this is just a digital camera; however, the 3d scanning tools actually record the distance and angle to points on the image. The tool may make hundreds of scans and record thousands of points to make an accurate digital rendition of the object. The image has information that can be used to reproduce the 3d object when the computer is connected to a modeling tool.

The use of 3d scanning is often used in motion pictures. The movie industry can throw a model off a building and record the fall. Then that image can be dressed in almost any clothing to produce a realistic image of a fall without involving stunt men who could be injured in the process. The result is a realistic looking scene that is produced electronically.

A 3d scanner can also be used in architecture or in surveying. Scans of buildings or the topography of the land can be made so that accurate models can be prepared with the use of a computer. This technology may be used to prove that a building meets certain code requirements or in preparing topographical maps of an area.

There are many other areas where 3d scanning is useful. The tool allows a much more rapid way of gathering large quantities of data that can be recorded in the computer. The data may be used for industrial or other purposes. As 3d scanners become even more reliable, there will be other uses found for this technology.
