There isn’t much to fuss about on Facebook chat. It’s just a box that sits in a corner of your Facebook page. But this little window does include what many people consider essential to any Internet conversation: emoticons.

Emoticons or smileys are images that appear in the chat window whenever you use a specific combination of characters that match a particular image.  To give some examples, the colon, dash and right parenthesis or convert to a smiling face when you enter them on Facebook chat (and other chat software).  You could also type and get the result. Emoticons came into popular use on the Internet because they helped show emotions like pure written text could not.

Besides emoticons, Facebook chat also includes privacy controls and friend list management tool. You can decide who sees you when you go online and who doesn’t.

Where are the emoticons for Facebook chat?

There is no toolbar or palette on Facebook chat from which you can select emoticons.  To find emoticons or smileys to use, you have to try out combinations on your own or look for collections of smileys that other Facebook users have already discovered. (Apparently the Facebook team wants people to find these images on their own.)

To find smileys, first choose a friend to chat with. Click their name to open a chat dialog box. Type a message to start chatting. Let your friend know you are searching for emoticons. When you make a combination, hit Enter to see the result. If the characters convert into a picture, you may have found an emoticon.

Can I get more smileys on Facebook?

Facebook promises to continually add more emoticons, so you just have to wait. Some people advertise smiley software that can be added to Facebook. There is no guarantee as to the safety and security of these programs. You should look into the creator’s background and reputation before you use such an application.
